Hey friends!
I feel like it’s been forever since I’ve shared a hair post, and lately I’ve been getting messages asking how I still manage to throw my hair up and make it look somewhat intentional while juggling work, family life, sports schedules, and everything in between.
The truth? My messy mom bun has evolved a lot over the years.
Gone are the days of spending 45 minutes curling my hair before leaving the house. These days, I need something quick, easy, and capable of surviving a full day of errands, meetings, soccer practice, and dinner duty.
So today I’m sharing my current go-to messy bun routine – the one I can do in less than five minutes.
Why I Love the Mom Bun
- It works on clean hair or day-three hair.
- It keeps my hair out of my face while chasing kids and dogs.
- It looks put together with minimal effort.
- It transitions from school drop-off to date night surprisingly well.
Honestly, it’s become my signature style.
My 5-Minute Mom Bun Routine
Step 1: Add Texture

If my hair is freshly washed, I’ll spray a little dry shampoo or texture spray throughout the roots. Hair that’s a little “lived in” actually works best for this style.
Step 2: Gather Everything Up High

I flip my head over and gather my hair into a high ponytail. Don’t worry about making it perfect – some of the charm comes from the imperfections.
Step 3: Twist & Wrap

I loosely twist the ponytail and wrap it around itself.
Step 4: Secure

I use a few bobby pins and a soft hair tie to hold everything in place. If pieces fall out later in the day, I call it texture.
Step 5: Pull Out Face-Framing Pieces

This is the game changer. A few loose pieces around the face instantly make the style feel more effortless and less “I just cleaned the house.”
What I’m Using Lately
A few things I’ve been loving:
- Dry shampoo for extra volume
- Texturizing spray
- Large bobby pins
- Silk scrunchies that don’t leave creases
I’ll link my current favorites below for anyone curious.
Real Life Hair
One thing I’ve learned as I’ve gotten older is that hair doesn’t have to be perfect to look beautiful.
Some days my bun is Pinterest-worthy.
Other days, it looks like I fought a windstorm in the Target parking lot.
Either way, life keeps moving, and the memories matter more than perfect hair.
If you’re a busy mom, working woman, or just someone who values sleep over a complicated beauty routine, this hairstyle might become your new best friend, too.
